Job Description:
The Senior Environmental Specialist is part of the environmental team that works to ensure compliance with applicable local, state and federal environmental laws and regulations, as well as permit conditions and environmental programs. This position will support development and implementation of internal environmental policies, procedures, initiatives and programs.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide technical and regulatory support for day-to-day environmental compliance.
- Provides company-wide development and execution of compliance strategies for all environmental programs including but not limited to air, wastewater, stormwater, public water supply, refrigerant management, solid and hazardous waste, chemical antiterrorism, spill prevention and emergency response plans.
- Manages the development and submittal of environmental permit applications, programs and plans. Requests and negotiates permit changes and conditions. This also includes interaction with plant personnel and project engineers to understand the project scope and to provide environmental guidance.
- Manages regulatory-required environmental monitoring, reporting and recordkeeping and maintains these records in accordance with the company record retention policy.
- Executes proper management of all applicable sites’ waste management activities to ensure full compliance with federal, state and local regulations including preparing hazardous waste manifests and coordination of hazardous waste shipments.
- Prepares, implements and maintains applicable environmental training programs for the organization. This includes delivery and documentation of required training.
- Participates in internal EHS compliance audits across all operating companies to evaluate program and training effectiveness and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
- Drives the execution and continuous improvement of environmental programs and sustainability initiatives.
- Evaluates environmental implications of project activities to identify regulatory requirements.
- Participates in environmental regulatory agency inspections.
- Performs special assignments within the company to develop and implement solutions to specific environmental needs.
- Serves as the organizational liaison with local, state and federal regulatory agencies.
- Stays abreast of new/emerging local, state and federal environmental regulations applicable to our operations.
Qualifications:
- A B.S. or advanced degree in engineering, relevant sciences or specific environmental discipline.
- 5+ years of relevant environmental experience.
- Computer skills, specifically the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook, SAP and ability to learn to use proprietary databases and other computer based applications.
- Advanced organizational skills, detail-orientated and ability to meet deadlines with high degree of accuracy.
- Excellent presentation skills.
- Must be able to work without direct supervision to accomplish goals and meet schedules and work as a team leader/facilitator to address specific issues.
- Possess strong problem-solving, critical thinking, reasoning and decision-making skills.
- Experience with regulatory programs preferred.
- Must be comfortable and competent at interfacing with governmental agencies.
- Must have the ability to read and grasp environmental regulations, technical documents and mathematical calculations.
- Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written) and work with various departments.
